Early Childhood Education  :   Role Play

Play is the most natural activity that children engage in.  Through play, they construct their knowledge and also express their thoughts and ideas about their world. Role Play, or dramatic play is particularly important as it involves abstract thinking. Through such play, children learn to play collaboratively and share responsibilities. As they often take on roles of adults, they use complex language structure and newer vocabulary.

Children often play out their real life experiences and learn to deal with their feelings and emotions particularly, negative ones e.g. the fear of going to a doctor or disappointment about not getting something they want, death or illness in the family and so forth.

It is also very important that the parents encourage such role play at home. Here is a video of one of our teacher s 2 year old son playing with utensils imitating his mother.
