Children master oral communication quite early and quite effortlessly. Given the right opportunities, they show the ability to do the same with written language. They read by using effective strategies such as looking at the pictures, trying to figure out a word or guessing. Similarly, for expressing their thoughts and ideas in writing they may invent their own script, draw pictures and combine these expressions with oral expressions.
However, children need explicit and systematic instruction and guidance to learn and master the various concepts related to written language communication.
