A Man Apart |
Through a YouTube advertisement I came to know about the work of a young Bangalorean, Haris Ali. He runs a shelter for dogs. I felt it was a good opportunity to sensitize children and show this side of human nature. Haris immediately agreed to talk to children online. Children had lot of questions- Are you the only one doing this work? When did you realize you should do this work? How much does it cost you a month? Why do people treat dogs badly? Did your parents support or oppose you for this work? Do you have training for this job? How do you handle aggressive dogs? How you remember names of so many dogs? Is this your part-time job? What do you do if a dog dies during the treatment?
Haris answered them patiently. He took us around the shelter and introduced to some of his four-legged friends. Children also shared their experiences of saving animals. Haris appreciated their work and thanked them for the step they had taken.
After the session some eighth grade students penned their thoughts.
A man who lives in Bengaluru is a true lover of dogs. He has around 150 dogs! Can you believe it? I saw it with my own eyes in a zoom session on a Saturday afternoon. Haris Ali showed us dogs at his Sarvoham shelter. He does not have beautiful or expensive dogs. He takes care of 150 injured and stray dogs. I feel that Haris dada is doing very good work. This is the first time I have seen a man who loves dogs so much! - Pratik Kakade
Danny does not have one eye. He is a permanent resident at Sarvoham shelter. There are many permanent resident dogs like Danny there. Haris Ali helps all such injured dogs. He and his team rescue injured, sick stray dogs from Bengaluru city and bring them to Sarvoham.
On 30 February we planned a zoom session with Haris dada. He showed us the animal shelter. In the shelter there were dog houses, play areas for dogs and a big treatment room. The dogs undergoing treatment were kept in cages. Other dogs were free. Haris dada and his team take good care of the dogs. They give them chicken rice twice a day. They order 100 kg waste chicken a week. They also take dogs for walks outside the shelter.
Some people adopt dogs. The paper work for adoption is very strict. The team visits the home of people who want to adopt. After adoption the team visits the owner once a fortnight to see if the dog is ok. In a year only 3-4 dogs are adopted. People don't like injured dogs. Sarvoham is heaven for such dogs. Haris dada gives them second life. The dogs come out of their pain and lead a very happy life.
If I get a chance I would like to adopt a dog from the shelter and give it lots of love. - Sakshi Mitkari
Sometimes we see injured dogs on the streets and wonder what will happen to them? When I see such dogs I feel very bad. Why do people leave dogs on the street? Don't they feel bad for the dogs?
Then I saw a video of Haris Ali from Bengaluru. He runs a shelter for dogs. We got a chance to chat with him online. I liked Haris dada's work. I was really happy for the dogs. When dada showed us a dog with only one eye I felt very hurt. Everyone in the shelter was taking good care of the 150 dogs. I liked their adoption method. I felt good that someone is there who cares so much about animals. - Prachiti Doshi
“Dogs cannot speak. They cannot tell us about their pain. Stray dogs sleep anywhere, they eat anything. People harass them.” Haris dada was speaking. His voice showed how much he loved animals. When he was in 7th or 8th standard there was a female dog near his house. She gave birth to four puppies. He would play with them and give food to the puppies. He bought biscuits from his pocket money and gave them to puppies. One of these cute puppies was killed by people in front of his eyes. He still remembers that sad day.
When he started the shelter he was 26 years old. He was making money in his business and spending it on the shelter. He wasn’t interested in buying a house or a car. He says, “The joy of watching a sick dog getting cured cannot be compared to anything else.” - Anjali Raut
One day I was going for a walk. I saw a puppy with scabies. My mom wore plastic on her hands and picked up the puppy carefully. We had dog scabies medicine at our home. We washed the puppy and applied medicine with a plastic bag on our hands. A month later the puppy was better. We called him Moti (pearl) because his colour was white. We wanted Moti to stay with us but his wish was to live with his friends. So we left him with his friends. - Siddhi Jagadale
A dog was wailing in the background. Someone asked Haris dada, “Why is that dog crying?" "He wants to be free," Haris dada said. But he will be released from the cage only after his medical treatment. Haris Ali was walking us through his dog shelter. He has started this shelter for stray dogs with his hard earned money. He rescues injured dogs in Bengaluru and provides them a safe home. He has kept hundreds of dogs in the shelter. His kindness towards the dogs is visible in his eyes. - Amey Mohite
On 30 January we met the owner of a dog's shelter in Bengaluru online. His name is Haris Ali. He is a very kind fellow. His shelter has 150 bogs. Every day Haris receives 10 to 15 calls every day for dogs rescue but his shelter can accommodate only 4 to 5. Haris brings injured dogs in the shelter, gives treatment to them and takes care of them. Some people give donation and some people adopt dogs from shelter. Haris’ work is very inspiring. - Varad Bhosale
When I saw so many dogs on the zoom screen I was surprised. When Haris dada was speaking the dogs were barking in the background. Haris dada is crazy about dogs. He treats sick dogs in his shelter. I would love to work with him. This is beautiful work. - Yash Nale
Dogs that don’t have a home will definitely get a home at Haris Ali’s Sarvoham shelter. They gave proper medical treatment. They get chicken rice to eat. Some dogs don’t have eyes, some don’t have legs. Haris and his team take good care of them. It's great work. I can also take care of animals. They are important part of nature. - Anushka Dhamal Madhura Rajvanshi |
